Peter Lik to close all his Australian galleries!
Yes you’ve heard it right! Peter Lik is reportedly closing all his Australian galleries due to a downturn in sales. The Saturday edition of Cairns Post carried an article that stated while sales had dropped dramatically in Australia, business was booming in the US.
“In an effort to focus attention on the burgeoning worldwide market, plans have been drawn for the suspension of operations in Lik’s four Australian galleries,” said Peter Lik Corporation chief executive officer Stephen Borzi.
“The company will now focus its attention on worldwide expansion and consider future plans for a larger base of operations in Australia.”
Establishing his first gallery in his hometown Cairns back in 1999, he quickly opened three more over the next two years in Port Douglas, Noosa and Sydney. He has based himself in the USA for the past 7 years or so, successfully opening numerous galleries all over the country.

I guess this is a sign of things to come for all of us making a buck from photography. It’s a shame to see him pull out of Nth Queensland. But I’d love to get my hands on the floor space of his Cairns Gallery.
Lik’s momentum of new gallery locations is showing no sign of slowing down. Especially when he reaches out to country’s beyond the US like the article states.

I have only been to his Sydney gallery here in Australia but have just returned from three weeks overseas and went to four of his galleries in America. You can see just by going into his galleries in america where his energy lies… and good on him. If the USA is where he can make the most money, then half his luck. His galleries in Vegas alone are in probably three of the best motel / resorts in town. Matt mentioned he would like his floor space in Cairns…. but his space in the USA would be better ( along with the higher profile clients and wallets to go with it )

Not surprised, when you fail to take care of existing customers you are bound to be forced to seek out new clients elsewhere. Peter Lik fails to stand behind his work, if it bubbles of flaws he tries to up sell you versus make good on his poor quality of workmanship.
